But it’s not fair!!
I might be approaching middle age, but I am not beyond the desire that things work out my way. That life goes according to my plans. That people agree with me and like me. I don’t know if we ever truly grow out of that.
But tonight, I was sitting in my Bible study and was faced, again, with the truth that I too often forget:
God is God, and I am not.
Who am I to question Him? To think that I, in my finite mind and limited perspective, know better how things should go?
But I do. I do question him. I may not say “You’re unfair,” but my actions say it. They say it when, instead of being grateful for the AMAZING gifts he has given me, I complain about the things I don’t have. They say it when I throw my powder down in disgust because it can’t cover the blemishes that I – long past my teen years – still have. They show it when I whine about not getting those cute new pumps I saw at DSW while sitting in front of my cable TV and surfing my high-speed internet.
I did it when my life plans weren’t working out the way I expected them to. When God moved our family thousands of miles from everything and everyone we knew. Four times. When circumstances were tough and didn’t make sense. I got upset and felt, in my heart, God wasn’t being fair to me. I try to serve Him, to do what’s right. Why doesn’t he lavish me with gold and mansions and a flawless complexion?
I am so thankful for God’s word that pierces through the lies my heart tries to feed my mind. God’s word tells me that the Creator knows better than his creation. That he is loving and in control, and that he will work all things out for good to those who love him. It may not be in our timing, but it’s in his.
God is God. I was put on this earth to serve him, not the other way around.
Sometimes, I forget that. And when I forget that, I get cranky. Because happy doesn’t come from getting everything you want. It comes from knowing you have everything you need.

Scar Pride
I was sitting watching TV with the girls when a commercial came on, advertising a cream “that makes scars disappear”! Little girls were grinning now that their skinned knees were scar-free. Women eyed the camera seductively, no more embarrassing scars for them. They were so happy. And it was all because of that magic little bottle of cream.
I immediately thought of my back. I have a scar that begins at the base of my neck and keeps going for about 18 inches. It is a beautiful scar. The surgeon worked hard to make sure most of the scar was pencil-thin. Only the very bottom is thick. Now, after 24 years, it blends into my back, a barely noticeable reminder of one of the most painful experiences of my life (see “My Back Story” for details).
That surgery was a major event in my life. A milestone. It literally shaped who I am. Would I really want a cream to make it go away?
No way!
I am proud of my scar. When people see it peeking out of the top of my T-shirts or flagrantly displayed in bathing suits, I tell them my story. I flaunt my medically-induced perfect posture. I brag that I will never have to deal with slipped disks or osteoporosis.
This scar and I have been friends far too long to just rub her away with a cream I barely know.
So I turned the channel in disdain….wait, a Green Tea that burns belly fat “with no diet or exercise”? Now that’s more like it!…
Mathematically Challenged
If I were Superman, math would be my kryptonite.
If I were Dorothy, math would be my Wicked Witch of the West.
If I were Snow White, math would be my juicy red apple.
I really hate math.
My hatred goes way back. I remember being in second grade, sitting in Mr. Spellman’s class, wondering why in the world I should care if Suzy gave two of her five cookies to Sally. What kind of insane seven-year-old gives away her cookies, anyway?
I know math is important. That the rollar coasters I love to ride would fall apart without math. That this computer wouldn’t compute without math. I know.
But I still don’t like it.
That’s all. I know ranting is frowned upon in blogs. But I thought you should know this about me.
Moral of the story: If you give me 5 cookies, you will get none back.
